'Conversation Tool', 2024, (steel frame, cardboard, oil paint, resin)

During Milan Design Week 2024, BASE transformed its spaces into a "convivial laboratory," fostering a temporary community of designers, architects, and artists under 30. This collaborative setting invited visitors to explore innovative practices of coexistence, cohabitation, and sharing as they intersect with contemporary issues such as migration, gender, ability, health, and cultural identity. We Will Design 2024 became as a platform to explore the complexities of conviviality—a shared need rooted in cooperation, mutual care, and solidarity—across Europe’s evolving cultural and spatial landscapes. Visitors encountered new domestic paradigms, from cohousing and cooperatives to self-building collectives, as well as reimagined uses of public space that uncover unseen potentials and challenge preconceptions of belonging and place.

We were invited to participate with our project, Why Can’t We Live Together?, where we introduced a sculptural device designed as a "conversation tool." Conceived as a playful spatial object, it encourages audience engagement, inviting visitors to explore new spatial relationships. The sculpture allows three people to place their heads through openings in the lower part, merging them with the object and creating space for spontaneous encounters, dialogue, and collective movement. This interactive piece reflects our broader research on bodily devices as spatial systems that facilitate diverse modes of interaction and connection, emphasising playfulness as a means to prompt participation and engagement.
